BAKLAVA

SWEET WALNUT PASTRY WITH FILO(BAKLAVA)

FOR BAKHLAVA

  • 25 FILO DOUGH SHEET
  • 3 CUPS CHOPPED WALNUTS
  • 1 CUP FINELY CHOPPED ALMONDS
  • 1/2 SUGAR
  • 1/2 T/S CINNAMON POWDER
  • 1 ORANGE PEEL
  • 1 1/2 CUP BUTTER

FOR SYRUP

  • 2 CUP SUGAR
  • 1 1/2 CUP WATER
  • 1 1/2 T/S LEMON JUICE

STEP 1:-

  • MIX NUTS, SUGAR, CINNAMON, ORANGE PEEL FOR FILLING. TAKE A BAKING PAN AND SPREAD THE BUTTER. CUT SHEETS OF FILO IN HALF TO FIT THE PAN. PLACE 10 CUT SHEETS OF FILO IN THE BOTTOM OF THE PAN LIGHTLY BRUSHING EACH LAYER WITH MELTED BUTTER. 

STEP 2:-

  • SPRINKLE 1/3 OF NUT MIXTURE ON TOP OF SHEETS. REPEAT WITH NEXT 10 SHEETS AND NUTS.PLACE ABOUT 20 LAYERS OF FILO ON TOP, LIGHTLY BUTTERING EACH.

STEP 3:-

  • USING A SHARP KNIFE. CUT THE SHAPE OF DIAMOND. SPRINKLE LIGHTLY WITH WATER TO PREVENT CURLING OF TOP LAYERS. 

STEP 4:-

  • BAKE FOR 15 MINS AT 350° F. POUR ANY REMAINING BUTTER OVER DOUGH AND CONTINUE BAKING 20-25 MINS UNTIL IT TURNS GOLDEN BROWN IN COLOR.

STEP 5:-

  • PREPARE SYRUP
  • PLACE SUGAR, WATER IN LARGE POT AND STIR OVER MEDIUM HEAT TILL SUGAR GETS DISSOLVED. ADD LEMON JUICE. CONTINUE TO BOIL FOR 15 MINS. COOL TO LUKEWARM. 

STEP 6:-

  • WHEN THE SHEETS ARE BAKED SPOON SYRUP EVENLY OVER BAKLAVA AND LEAVE IT FOR SEVERAL HOURS.
